[Confirmed] General Asim Munir Shah appointed as the New Army Chief of Pakistan

Shahbaz Sharif was in London for a reason. He has appointed General Asim Munir as COAS. Clearly, General Asim was my favorite candidate for the next Army Chief appointment. This announcement came just in time, as Lieutenant General Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah would have been retiring on 22nd November 2022, next to him is Lt. General SS Mirza to become COAS. General Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah HI(M) held the rank of a three-star general and was recently the Pakistan Army’s quartermaster general.

Among the generals vying to lead Pakistan’s Army, he was now the most senior commander on the list. He is the senior-most. The summary included probable names in order of seniority; Asim Munir, Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Azhar Abbass, Faiz Hameed, and Nouman Mehmood. I think this position directly affects not just the institution and its command itself but an array of other areas such as military coordination with allies, and perhaps matters which are beyond the actual job description – such a role then requires a very dynamic individual who checks out on all fronts and is still free of any controversy before and after the appointment. Difficult to limit choice on the basis of seniority, and frankly, should not be.

From a PTI’s point of view, Asim Munir, the ISI chief at the time, behaved honorably by informing ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan about corrupt individuals like Farah Gogi and Bushra Bibi. Asim Munir was transferred by Imran Khan. But then Pakistan was under smart martial law as Khan was being a ladla.

General Asim Munir’s Military Career

Syed Asim Munir, a graduate of the 17th OTS course at Mangla, was commissioned into the 23rd Battalion of the Frontier Force Regiment and is a Sword of Honor holder. He previously held the position of Director General of Military Intelligence before being upgraded to the rank of Lieutenant General in September 2018 and subsequently appointed as DG ISI. In March 2018, he received the Hilal-i-Imtiaz award.

He had previously held the position of commander for the troops stationed in Pakistan’s northern regions. In October 2018, he was named DG ISI, and Lt Gen Faiz Hameed, the pro-Haqeeqi Azaadi March candidate, took over as the new DG ISI in June 2019. In Gujranwala, Munir was moved and given the position of Corps Commander. He is one of the Pakistani army’s most capable and brave generals, and his military career has always been successful.

Since his time as a brigade commander in the Force Command Northern Areas under Gen Bajwa, who was then Commander X Corps, he has been a close assistant to the current COAS. He was subsequently named DG of Military Intelligence in early 2017 and made the ISI chief in October of that same year. His tenure as the top intelligence officer, however, ended up being the shortest in history since, at the behest of the then-prime minister Imran Khan, he was replaced by Lt. Gen. Faiz Hamid after only eight months. He was appointed as the commander of the Gujranwala Corps and served in that capacity for two years before being transferred to the GHQ as the Quartermaster General.

In sha ALLAH under him, Kashmir banay ga Pakistan.
